J-1 Status
Procedures for the employment
of Research Scholars, Short-term Scholars, and Instructors in J-1 Status (Exchange
Visitors)
A
department head interested in bringing a research scholar, a
short-term scholar, or
an instructor to ASU as an exchange visitor in J-1 status will need to forward completed
Preliminary Data
Sheets for that individual to the Faculty Immigration Specialist
(FIS).
If the
non-immigrant is coming as an exchange visitor (J-1 research scholar,
short-term scholar
or instructor):
The department head, with assistance from FIS,
will need to confirm that sufficient funding is available for the
exchange visitor.
The department head will need to secure the
dean’s approval for offering a position to the exchange visitor.
The Faculty Immigration Specialist will
prepare the form DS-2019 for the exchange visitor (and a letter for
dependents, when appropriate.)
The department head will complete the form I-9
for the exchange visitor.
The Faculty Immigration Specialist and the
Office of Human Resources will review the I-9 to ensure that it is
appropriately completed. They will monitor in what capacity
the employee may work and until when.
The Payroll Department will advise the
employee of the appropriate income tax withholdings.
